There are three specific functions within this ministry for the cantor.
1 – The cantor is the singer and leader of the congregational song.
2 – The cantor may sing in alteration or dialogue with the assembly.
3 – The cantor may also incorporate the role of the psalmist, singing the responsorial psalm at Mass.
Some of the basic requirements include:
A pleasant singing voice with which the assembly is comfortable listening to and singing with.
Must have the ability to project and enunciate.
An overall confidence with singing and speaking in front of others.
Dedication to the preparation and learning the music.
Cantors should also be fully initiated Catholics, having received all three sacraments of Initiation, along with being in good standing with the church and an active member.
Full participation in the liturgy, including being engaged in the responses, readings, homily and prayers of the Mass.
